How to use

Purpose

Chinese-character to Pinyin converter supporting tones (zhōng guó), no tones (zhong guo), numeric tones (zhong1 guo2), initials (z g), uppercase initials (Z G). Handles polyphonic characters (context-aware), erhua, neutral tones, "yi" and "bu" tone-change rules. Common for pinyin annotations (publishing), dictionary lookups, generating domain/usernames (Chinese name to pinyin), educational support, SEO URL paths. All conversion runs locally.

Steps

  1. Type Chinese text on the left (mixed Chinese-English okay)
  2. Right pane shows pinyin in real time
  3. Tone format: with tone marks (zhōng), numeric (zhong1), plain (zhong)
  4. Spacing: per-character spaces, joined per word, hyphen-joined
  5. Initials: just initials (zg), uppercase (ZG)
  6. Polyphonic: smart mode (context-aware) or strict per-character mode
  7. Non-Chinese (English, digits, symbols) preserved
  8. Traditional Chinese supported (auto-detects simplified/traditional)

FAQ

How are polyphonic characters handled? "长" — cháng or zhǎng?
The tool determines from word context. 长城 auto cháng chéng (cháng); 成长 auto chéng zhǎng (zhǎng). Rare polyphonic characters may be misjudged — strict per-character mode picks the most common reading. For formal publishing, manual review is advised.
How are "一" and "不" tone changes handled?
Mandarin tone-change rules: "一" is yī (1st tone) by default, but becomes yí (2nd) before 4th-tone characters: 一个 yí gè; becomes yì (4th) before 1/2/3-tone characters: 一边 yì biān. "不" defaults to bù (4th); becomes bú before 4th-tone: 不去 bú qù. Tool defaults to "context tone" (matches actual pronunciation); switch to "literal tone" to keep base tones.
Erhua handling?
Erhua outputs as huār / wánr (r appended to previous syllable). Strong northern-accent words (玩儿, 哪儿, 一会儿) default to erhua. For formal written texts, switch to "no erhua" mode where 儿 stays a separate syllable.
Does it support Traditional Chinese?
Built-in simplified/traditional dictionary. Traditional input recognized directly: 國 → guó, 愛 → ài. Works for HK/Taiwan traditional text and Mainland names (e.g., HK name 鄭).
Chinese personal names — surname pinyin needs special handling?
Some surnames have non-standard readings: 单 as surname = Shàn (not dān); 区 as surname = Ōu (not qū); 任 as surname = Rén (not rèn). The tool has a "name mode" that applies surname rules to the first character. Use name mode for passport pinyin or formal signatures.
